Usquequo, Domine?
Oratio hominis qui in tenebris manet et tamen exspectat.
IUsquequo, Domine?
VIAmici mei procul steterunt; qui me noverant, nomen meum tacent.
VIICor meum contritum est velut vas figuli in via, et nemo colligit fragmenta.
VIIIOssa mea dolores meos numerant, et singuli dolores nomen suum habent.
IXInterrogo caelum, et caelum tacet; interrogo terram, et terra pulverem respondet.
XUbi es, tu qui abyssum manu tua mensus es? Numquid mensura tua me praeteriit?
XIIUnum verbum tuum mihi sufficit, unius syllabae lumen in tenebris meis.
XVISi adhuc tacueris, in silentio tuo tamen te exspectabo.
XXUsquequo, Domine? Donec respondeas. Et respondebis. Amen.
Translatio
- How long, Lord? I cry out, and my voice is scattered in the wind.
- My throat is dried like a potsherd in the kiln, and my tongue can barely shape your name.
- My nights are longer than the surveyor's cord; my days go out like smoke through a window.
- My tears are salt in my mouth, and they find no spring of comfort.
- The weight of your hand lies on my shoulders, and I do not understand my fault.
- My friends have stood far off; those who knew me keep my name silent.
- My heart is broken like a potter's jar on the road, and no one gathers the pieces.
- My bones count my sorrows, and each sorrow has a name of its own.
- I question the sky, and the sky is silent; I question the earth, and the earth answers dust.
- Where are you, who measured the deep with your hand? Has your measure passed me by?
- I do not ask for riches, I do not ask for many years: I ask that you look at me.
- One word of yours is enough for me, the light of a single syllable in my darkness.
- Have mercy on me, God: not because I am worthy, but because you are merciful.
- Break my hardness, lest I break without you; heal me, even if your hand hurts.
- Give me back the voice for singing, and the weight of bread in my hands.
- If you stay silent still, I will wait for you even inside your silence.
- For your anger is a moment, but your mercy is an age without end.
- You have counted my wounds and have not despised them; you know how many and from where.
- And when morning comes, I will say: I slept in the dark and did not perish.
- How long, Lord? Until you answer. And you will answer. Amen.
Amen.
